I.                   Introduction

 

The topic of our team for the first week is “Calibrate or not calibrate? Which parameters and variables in kind of hydrological models (black box, reservoirs, physically based, etc...).

Around this topic, we held a brainstorming meeting and defined the daily tasks for each member. Several software and models are chosen for solve the problematic. With the help of supervisors’ advices, we refined the tasks and the final conclusion we need to get. A final weekly report and a presentation are asked to be accomplished on Friday.

 

II.                Problematic

 

“Calibrate or not calibrate? Which parameters and variables in kind of hydrological models (black box, reservoirs, physically based, etc...). As 1994 Var catchment flood is no longer the single study issue for this two week, we need to focus on the comparison of impact of calibration on different models (black box, mathematical model, physical model).

III.              Methodology

 

We choose HEC-HMS, MIKE SHE as our hydrological analysis software. Three models will be worked on during this week, which are black box (empirical model), mathematical model and physical model. HEC-HMS is based on conceptual model while MIKE SHE is bases on physical model. Available data like Rainfall intensity, topography, land use, runoff losses and catchment storage can be downloaded on the HydroEurope website or found on the internet ourselves.

First of all, the definition of calibration need to be given. Then we need to well understand the concept of the three models. After several simulations on HEC-HMS and MIKE SHE by different calibration, we are supposed to compare the results of the two software on different aspects. Try to analyze and conclude the impact of calibration.
