DAILY REPORTS

Usually, a team meeting is held every day, at the begining of the afternoon. This time is an opportunity to reminding goals and having a review about what have been done.
Each daily report is an immersion in the team's life.

 13H30 :
START OF WORKSHOP

No team meeting today, the whole team is working on the report also on tomorrow's presentation. Ishara, Samy, Ricardo, Lukasz and Ricardo will present our work tomorrow.

The night was quite short. However, we have to work hard today to be ready for tomorrow. 

Lukasz and Andrea are still working on Iber modeling. They hope it's gonna run soon.
Allan os helping Giulia and Ishara within Hac-RAS modelling. He's trying to remove weirs from the model, cause it seems it's the reason of running issues.
Samy and Jianqiao are working on uncertainties related with hydrographs. They are writting this part which will be put in the second part of the report.
Ricardo is working on Hec-RAS parameters.
Thibaut is waiting for different part wich have to be part of second part of the report.
The social report will be done today. A projection will be held soon. We hope we will have an Oscar ! The video is now downloaded on our website : Life experience.

This night is also going to be quite short. Not because of the party, cause of hard working !

Winter came back
What has been done ?

Ricardo asks us to say what we are working on, one by one.

Helena : "I finished my part about data analyse and review. I sent it to Thibaut for the final report. I'm working now on the social report."
Giulia : "We should keep the idea of dividing the report into two parts : hydrological (first week) and hydraulical (second week). I'm working on Hec-RAS model with Ishara, we are trying to change coefficients in order to get different results. I agree to work on flow parameter."
Thibaut : "The first part of the engineer report is almost done. I need to summurize all parts. I did not start the second part yet."
Lukasz : "My part of the first week is done. I'm now working on the slides."
Allan : "I finished my SHETRAN report. I' going to work on cumulative uncertainties."
Samy : "Jianqiao and I are still working on hydrographs. We divided the work."
Andrea : "Still working on Iber simulation".
Ricardo : "I'm working on sea level parameters. If anybody has nothing to do, let me now, and we will decide who will work on time parameter.".

What has to be done ?

The presentation is on Friday, we have to be prepared.As last week, we have to do pre-presentation on Friaday morning, before 9:00 am.
Ishara, Giulia, Ricardo, Lukasz will talk on Friday.
We decided that tomorrow (let's say 8:00 pm) will be the dead line for the slide presentation and the engineer report. We would like to have a review on our work from our supervisor before the D-Day.
Tomorrow will be the last (but not least) working day.

Today we won't be abble to stay late because we are expected at 7:45 pm at Hard Rock Café.

START OF THE TEAM MEETING

It's still sunny outside 

Welcome to our new Supervisor ! The equation "One supervisor = one idea" is still confirmed !
Today we took time with Frank to know his opinion about our topic. His first comment was
BE CAREFULL WITH "...", it means so many things !
According to him, the question has to be aswered with three points :
1/ Defined the uncertainties, find a definition of this term. Linked this term with 1D modelling process.
2/ Find sources of uncertainties and 1D modelling limitation, do a comparaison with reality.
3/ Produce visual results. We have to present graphics, but also numbers.

Sentence of the day : "People want to eat numbers !"

In order to stay focus on the Friday's presentation, we prepared slides :
            

What have to be done ?

Now, we have to know who is doing what. As the final report has to be ready soon, Thibaut is in charge to collect each part of the report from all members. They are all invitated to write a part about what they did last week and this week. Then, all part will be sent to Thibaut.

We decided to propose different scenarios to illustrate the influence of the uncertainties with :
- maximum value
- base value
- minimum value

Following these scenarios, stategies to reduce uncertainties should be proposed. It will be a good solution to show that we know the uncertainties, the influence of these and how to pass throught.

Finally, we have to choose which uncertainties we want to talk about. We will not be able to present all uncertainties, this will be done within the engineer report. 

What are the tasks for tomorrow ?

A review about what has been done today will be necessary. Be sure about everbody know what to do. A dead line for the engineer report has to be decided. Same for Friday's presentation.

NO MORE SUSPENS
OUR NEW TOPIC IS : "UNCERTAINTIES IN 1D MODELLING FOR THE VAR LOW VALLEY (INPUT HYDROGRAPHS, ROUGHNESS,WEIR COEFFICIENTS, GEOMETRY, SEA LEVEL ... )

As usual, we have to do "step by step" for a better understanding of the question.
The plan's presentation could already by done, but we want to be sure about doing well.
So we decided to do a brainstorming with all ideas, thank to that we are sure that we are not going to forget anything.

What is the first idea ?

After discussions with several supervisors, we found the way to follow.

Uncertainties are related with: data, model and parameters.

The most important question is : "Where do the uncertainties come from and how do it influence on the results ?" We have to be aware about the accumulation of uncertainties while the modelling process. It means, there are uncertainties related with data, also with model and then, with parameters. So modelling results should not be a 100% a representation of the reality. 


How to do ?

We decided to stay focus on Hec-RAS software. According to us, it's the best tool to illustrate 1D modelling process.

Our topic is quite a theorical question. However, we have to illustrate it with visual results. That's why, we will do flood maps with different parameters (Manning coefficient, ...).

Ishara is going to prepare models with different cross section interpolation. Tomorrow, he will run the model.

Guilia will work on the 1D modelling assumptions. It will be done tomorrow.

We already talked about Friday's prensentation. The plan is not ready yet.

Points for tomorrow ?

Who is going to talk for Friday's presentation ? Who will be in charge to the Engineer report ? Who will prepare the presentation ? Who will work on our topic ?
All these question should be treated tomorrow.

Spring is there.

Today is a special day. We decided to stay focus on our respective work and cancel the team meeting. Everbody knows what to do and how to do. 

Good new of the day : Ricardo's simulation runs !
He gets a flood map !

The responsibles of the presentation are still working on it. We canceled the pre-presentation for today, it's scheduled for tomorrow morging, at 8:00 am. Be prepared is not a condition.

14h00 : START OF THE MEETING 

Spring is coming.

What has been done ?

Ricardo asks everyone to present what we are working on. The first presentation is on Friday so we need to be ready soon.

Thibault : “I’m almost done ! Description and comparison with the Black Box model is not ready yet but it will be this afternoon. I will add the probabilistic model in the list of studied model. Tomorrow I will prepare the presentation (slides).”

Samy/Jianqio : “The different parameters have been calculated in the HEC-HMS software. We keep in mind that we have to document how we calibrated our model.”

Giulia/Allan : “We used the Thiessen Method to create our model. Today we are gonna calibrate it. We payed attention of the hypothesis. At the end of the day, the model will be calibrated (SHETRAN).”

Isharaa : “I’m still focus on Resilience exercise. I found the risk flood index. The last report will be done at the end of the day”.

Andrea/Lukasz : “We are preparing the Iber model. We try to integrate the land use map into the model. The only one land use map that we get is from 1999. We have to find a more recent map”.

Ricardo proposes to keep only 4 or 5 types (to be faster) of land use and find a new version of land use map (Samy gets this map!).

Helena : “I’m still doing the data analysis. The available data are only a representation of two flood events (2011 and 2014). It’s hard to 
compare these two events cause of the limitation of number of data. Our group decided to stay focus on the 2011 flood during which the
recording of the data is spaced by 30 minutes”. The time lapse of 30 minutes is too short to be sure about the accuracy of the data.”
Ricardo : “The HEC-RAS model is done. Today I am gonna do the cross section. My goal for today is running the model.”

What are the problems ?

The presentation is on Friday. We need to organize it. For that, Ricardo proposes to divide the presentation into several parts. He did a “Flow chart”. The main question about it is “Do we need to present it as an introduction or as a conclusion ?”. 9 persons agree to say that’s better as in introduction, universal suffrage is always the winner… so, it will be a introduction !

The pre-presentation will be held tomorrow, at 5:30 pm. It’s gonna be a good opportunity to feel more confident on Friday.

Nora remind that we cannot give too much details, we have only 10 minutes to present our work.

Until now nobody in responsible of the social report. So, Héléna is designated as the Social Report Maker.

14h00 : START OF THE MEETING 

Very windy today.

What was done ?

We kept the idea of dividing the Var river in two parts : upstream Carros and downstream Carros in order to apply different types of model. "Le pont de la Manda", located is Carros is assigned as a spatial reference.We wiil use the rainfall data from this point to work.

What are the problems ?

We need to run the model as soon as possible to get results.This step is the begening of our work.

Brainstorming :

Nora reminds us the differences between lumped model, distributed model and black box model. She explains how these models were built. She also remind us to be very familiar with the definition of “Time concentration”.

Goals for today :

Preparing the model in HEC-RAS and IBER software. Also Allan and Giulia prepares the SHETRAN model. Helena is in charge to find flood risk map (within several scenarios), in ordre to help Andrea and Lukasz about IBER model.Thibault is looking for information about sustainability of lumped and distributed model, and which one is the best in our study case. Helena has to analyse data and propose hypotheses (on graph is already done).

What has been done ?

Preparing the modeling takes long time and seems not so easy ! Today we are gonna keep the same goal than today.

Ideas about social report should be proposed,

14h00 : START OF THE MEETING 

The weather outside is cloudy, the temperature is 13°C.

Nora (our supervisor) is there to show us the good direction to follow. She reminds us that her job is not to decide, just help us as a guide.

The first part of the discussion was dedicated to the review of the presentation of the day. Our supervisor ask us to give one point of improvement, which are :

  • We did not speak enough about results (hydrological and hydraulic), we stayed focus on how manage the team and how to get results ;
  • We have to be more prepared for the next presentation ;
  • Our results have to be more visual. All the other teams presented map flood, not us.

Ricardo, our team leader, presents the main subject which will be treated by the team. We have to choose which part we want to improve or put away. Nora tell us that we should focus on a part of low Var valley and work on accuracy, uncertainties and solutions. She reminds the important point is to justify each proposal and define the goal precisely. There is no perfect hydrograph, there is very good hydrograph based on good hypothesis.

Ricardo presented again what we are going to work one. After that, sub-teams were decidedTwo hydraulic models will be created thanks to two software :

We decide to have a team meeting each day, at the beginning of the afternoon. This event will be devided into different parts: 

  • What was done ?
  • Which are the problems  ?
  • Short brainstorming
  •  What are the goals (short and long term)
  • Working
  • What has been done ?

We will inscribe the team point advancement on the left side of the board in our room. Some post will has to be check day by day.

As M. Gourberville told us this morning, a video (or other communication social report about team life) will has to be created. Tomorrow, during the team meeting, the decision about what, and how to do this report will be take. Some of us have already good and creative ideas.

 

14h50: WE NOW KNOW THE QUESTION : “Best strategy (1) for hydrological model and producing the relevant hydrographs (2) for the hydraulic simulation (3) of the low Var valley ? “.

Weather outside is still cloudy...

 

For a better understanding of the question, we decide to cut the question in tree parts. To answer the question, we will make link between theory and application within our study. The strategy can be describing step by step. We already have some idea to respond at the question. 

Thibault will be in charge to compare the efficiency of the different models and which one we have to use in which case (1). Héléna will be in charge of data analysis (1).

All this work will be put in parallel to answer the weekly question and then, work on our subject.

We need to define precisely the term “relevant”. 

Google Drive will still be used to share information and documents. She advises us to write everything! Each research, work or reflexion has to be written. It helps for the engineer report.
