3rd Team HydroEurope

Welcome to the Project page of the 3rd team in HydroEurope 2017. 

The Var basin is an example of a densely-populated zone characterized by a dense transport infrastructure (including a major international airport), high urbanization and socio-economic development. The extremely varied catchment lithology of the basin and the steep slopes of the river are the principal reasons of the high risk of flooding. The flow regime of the Var is irregular over time.
The mean discharge is about 70 m³/s and the mean maximum flood discharge about 830 m³/s but this value can increase significantly in few hours with a sustained rainfall. This happened during the flood event in 1994 when a heavy rainfall affected the entire Var basin and the peak discharge of the river, reach a value of 3770 m³/s. This event was particularly devastating with damages estimated around 23 million of Euros.

             

In this context derives the aim of our team. In fact, in order to increase the flood resilience of the Var catchment, our team will analyse and simulate the flood event of 2011 and will propose some solutions with an innovative pedagogic approach. After a preparation of several months, our team will propose the results of our work during the Hydroeurope event in the Polytech of Nice-Sophia Antipolis during two weeks (02.13.2017-25.02.2017).
Our first presentation, presented at the begening of the face to face experience, introduced the teams members, and proposed our expectations for this HydroEurope experience.

First week :

Our topic was "The best strategy for hydrological modelling and producing relevant hydrograph for the hydraulic simulation of the low Var Valley."

We decided to choose SHE-TRAN, Hec-HMS, Iber as software modelling and work on theoritical part of the question. The presentation of this topic first is joined here.

Second week :

Our topic for the second week was : "Uncertainties in 1D modelling for the low Var Valley (input hydrographs, roughness, weir coefficients, geometry, sea level, ...)."

As this question is related with 1D modelling only, we stayed focus that. We worked on Hec-RAS including several parameters.

Conclusion :

Our expactations have been changed from the begining of HydroEurope experience. We did not have time to propose
some solutions with an innovative pedagogic approac. Instead of proposing an answer for this begining aim, we stayed focus on both topics. However, we did our best to propose accurate answers each Friday's presentation.
