3.4. Final Report

Abstract:

In a context of climate change, where flooding issues and mitigation measures are taking very seriously, professionals and scientists are trying to simulate past events in order to understand the phenomenon. One of the methods actually used to analyze past events is to build models. Benchmarks have to be introduced in order to evaluate the accuracy of the models. RMSE, Nash--Sutcliffe efficiency and coefficient of determination (R^2) are used as accuracy benchmarks for this study.

On the other hand,
it is important to inform the public in general regarding environmental and hydraulics project. To illustrate this fact, a scenario was held, where
the Metropole Nice Côte d’Azur demands a study on the impact of a flood with the same magnitude as 1994 would have on the present day. The Metropole also wants to know the kind of measures that could be taken to prevent flooding for a better presentation of the results. After simulations using HEC-RAS 2D, and adding 2 meters dikes on both sides of the Var river, it occurs that these structures stopped the flooding at the urban area. The study shows that results should be presented differently to each groups depending on their demands and educational level.
